PHOENIX, Ariz. (January 16, 2010) – After an epic premier one week ago, round two of the 2010 Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, season didn’t disappoint as Rockstar/Makita/Suzuki’s Ryan Dungey, of Belle Plaine, Minn., won his first career AMA Supercross class victory en route to taking the points lead. Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Jake Weimer, of Rupert, Idaho, captured his second straight AMA Supercross Lites Western Regional victory.

The night began dramatically when points leader James Stewart, of Haines City, Fla., was involved in a frightening crash during his heat race. The San Manuel Yamaha rider overcame obvious pain to compete in the last chance qualifier where he took the win and qualified for the main event. As the gates dropped, Dungey raced to his second straight SPIKE Holeshot Award, with Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto, of Poulsbo, Wash., and teammate Austin Stroupe, of Lincolnton, N.C., following, and never looked back leading all 20 laps of the main event.

“I’m just pumped on the nice performance (tonight),” said Dungey. “This is a big step in my career. I owe a lot of thanks to all the people supporting me. I’m glad to get this out of the way and I’ll never forget it. It’s early in the season and last week was tough. James was on it and I hope he’s ok. It’s just great to come out with a win here in round two.”

Stewart found himself buried in the back of the field alongside rival Chad Reed, of Tampa, Fla., and the duo followed one another throughout the early part of the race until Reed attempted to pass the reigning champion on lap five, causing a collision and subsequent fall for both riders. Reed failed to finish for the second week in a row while Stewart soldiered home in 15th. Villopoto rode to a solid runner-up finish while San Manuel Yamaha’s Josh Hill, of Yoncalla, Ore., landed in third

    Default its-official-chad-reed-has-broken-hand

From Kawasaki: 2-time AMA Supercross Champion & defending AMA Motocross Champion Chad Reed says of Saturday night's Supercross race in Phoenix. Specifically a crash between him and James Stewart in the 450 Supercross main event:

"I went in on the inside (of a right hand corner) and James (Stewart) was on the outside. He turned down really quick to pass a couple of guys and I had nowhere to go. We collided and went down and that's when I broke my hand. This season has been difficult. It is hard to put into words how I feel. My personal life is great right now ... I'm so happy. I'm about to be a dad."

Chad continues: "My professional life is a struggle right now, finishing 19th the last two races. I've never been in this position before, but I want to get to 100% healthy and come back strong."

We'll have more info on this, and any related stories as they come about.

You can view Chad's Rider Profile here, and also send him a get well message.

Default Chad Reed's broken hand cools off Supercross rivalry with James Stewart

January 20, 2010, there is no hotter, more bitter rivalry in all of motorsports these days than James Stewart versus Chad Reed.

Unfortunately for Supercross and all its fans, that rivalry is about to cool off.

Reed underwent surgery on his broken left hand Tuesday, and the Monster Energy Kawasaki rider is expected to miss at least six weeks. Reed was injured during Saturday night’s 450 main event at Chase Field in Phoenix after tangling with Stewart.

Reed shoved Stewart’s helmet while climbing back on his bike, which was caught during Sunday's tape-delayed coverage on Speed TV. It was reported that Stewart then went after Reed in the pits once the race was completed and knocked Reed’s bike off its stand.

Kaminski-blog-logo.jpgSupercross officials fined Reed $5,000 and slapped him with a one-race suspension, while Stewart was given a warning.

However, Reed appealed, and the Supercross board ruled in favor of Reed. Not that it matters now, since Reed will be sidelined with the injury, beginning with Saturday’s race in Anaheim, Calif.

You either root for Stewart or you root for Reed. I can’t say that I have ever come across someone who says that they are a fan of both.

We are soon going to find out, though, how much better each rider makes the other, and how together, they make the series that much better.

    Default Dungy wins

ANAHEIM, Calif. (January 23, 2010) – Rockstar/Makita/Suzuki’s Ryan Dungey, of Belle Plaine, Minn., won his second-straight Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship race tonight at Angel Stadium. Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Jake Weimer, of Rupert, Idaho, won his third consecutive Western regional AMA Supercross Lites class race, leading all 15 laps of the main event.

Rockstar/Makita/Suzuki’s Austin Stroupe, of Lincolnton, N.C., won the $1,500 Spike Holeshot Award with San Manuel/Yamaha’s James Stewart, of Haines City, Fla., on his back wheel through turn one. Stewart moved into the lead, passing Stroupe on the opening lap. Stewart’s San Manuel/Yamaha teammate Josh Hill, of Yoncalla, Ore., then passed Stroupe for second. Dungey started in seventh and starting working his way through the pack, and by the end of lap two he was in fourth place.

At the end of lap six, Hill passed Stewart for the lead, and on lap 11, Dungey passed Stewart for second. Patiently waiting in second place, Dungey shot past Hill on lap 14 for the lead. Dungey held on for the win and extended his points lead to 15 over Hill. Hill finished second and Stewart finished third.

“On lap 12, I started to get tired and had to settle for second,” said Hill. “That was a great race up at the front of the pack, and I was enjoying the competition. The goal is to keep getting better each week.”

“It was a fun race, and we all raced clean,” said Dungey. “I was able to see what lines were working out there, so I learned through the race. I tried to be patient out there tonight. Racing 20 laps is a long time, so you have to be smart.”

“Ryan and Josh were riding awesome tonight, and I am happy to come out of here with a decent finish,” said Stewart. “I try my best, and that is all I can do. I always give it 100%.”

Weimer didn’t take long to establish the lead as he moved passed his teammate Josh Hansen, who won the Spike Holeshot Award, after turn two. Hansen, of Elbert, Colo., was passed on lap three by Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oil/Honda’s Wil Hahn, of Decatur, Texas. Late in the race GEICO Powersports Honda’s Trey Canard passed Hansen late in the race to secure third place.

Hahn held on for second place, which was his best finish of the 2010 season. Weimer now leads the Western Regional AMA Supercross Lites class points race with a 19-point lead over Canard.

“So far, so good for me,” said Weimer. “I wanted to come out here and win, and that is what I have earned. I am really excited about this. This is a huge step in the right direction.”

The AMA Supercross class will air on CBS Sports Sunday, January 24 at 1:00 p.m. EST and the AMA Supercross Lites class will air on SPEED Saturday, January 24 at 10:00 p.m. EST.

Default Wrist surgery forces james to the sidelines

Posted on 01/30/2010, 6:31 pm, by Ryan Cooley, under Blog, News.James Stewart #7 | Official Site | JS7.com | JS7 Motocross Videos, Pictures, Biography

James underwent successful surgery Friday afternoon to repair a broken scaphoid bone in his right wrist. Following last weekend’s race in Anaheim, where, after contemplating not even competing due to severe pain in his wrist following a crash in Phoenix the previous weekend, James rode valiantly to an impressive third-place finish.

Although initial x-rays after Phoenix did not indicate a break, an MRI performed on Thursday revealed that the bone was indeed broken. Surgery was performed by famed orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Arthur Ting, in Fremont, California.

As a result of the surgery, James will unfortunately not be competing in San Francisco this weekend. His return to racing will depend on how quickly he is able to recover post-surgery. He will be evaluated on a weekly basis, which will determine when he returns to the 2010 Supercross series.

“James is a true champion,” said L&M Racing’s Team Manager, Larry Brooks. “The fact that he rode as competitively as he did while making the podium at Anaheim 2 with a broken wrist (unknowingly) is testimony to that. He’s anxious to heal and get back on the track as soon as possible.”

Default Villopoto Victorious in San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO (January 30, 2009) – Before 41,872 at AT&T Park tonight, Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto, of Poulsbo, Wash., won his first Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, race. GEICO Powersports Honda’s Trey Canard, of Shawnee, Okla., won his first Western Regional AMA Supercross Lites class race of the season, leading wire-to-wire.

Rockstar/Makita/Suzuki’s Ryan Dungey, of Belle Plaine, Minn., captured the Spike Holeshot Award with Villopoto and Honda Red Bull Racing’s Davi Millsaps, of Tallahassee, Fla., following in second and third respectively. Millsaps passed Villopoto on the first lap but crashed on lap four, giving second place back to Villopoto.

While leading on lap 10, Dungey crashed and dropped back to fourth place. This allowed Villopoto to move into the lead, Hill to second and Millsaps to third.

“I lost my foot and went sailing,” said Dungey. “It could have been a lot worse. I am glad I am not hurt.”

The win for Villopoto marked the third in his career. Hill finished second and Millsaps finished third.

“The track was tough and slippery,” said Villopoto. “It was hard to put in 20 perfect laps out there tonight. It wasn’t the start that I wanted, so I played catch-up. It is a long season with a lot of racing left.”

Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oil/Honda’s Cole Seeley, of Newbury Park, Calif., won the Spike Holeshot Award, but it was Canard, who quickly stole the lead. Current Lites class points leader Jake Weimer, of the Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki team, moved into second with DNA Energy/Star Racing Yamaha’s Broc Tickle held the number three position. Weimer held on for second and Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Josh Hansen for third.

“I had a rough start to this season, and I am finally starting to come around,” said Canard. “This was great night for me and my team.”

“I hate losing and I lost tonight, but I have the points lead and am thankful for everyone that has helped me get here,” said Weimer.

CBS Sports will air the AMA Supercross class race on Sunday, January 31 at Noon EST and SPEED will air the AMA Supercross Lites class on Sunday, January 31 at 10:00 p.m. EST.

This Week in Monster Energy Supercross: San Diego

AURORA, Ill. (February 5, 2010) – Not since 2003 has Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, seen three different riders in four races earn victories in the premier AMA Supercross class. As Monster Energy Supercross heads into San Diego’s Qualcomm Stadium tomorrow night several riders will look for the opportunity to join 2010 AMA Supercross class winners James Stewart, Ryan Dungey and Ryan Villopoto as the fifth stop of the championship unfolds in sunny Southern California.

Rockstar/Makita/Suzuki’s Dungey, of Belle Plain, Minn., carries an 11-point lead over San Manuel Yamaha’s Josh Hill, of Yoncalla, Ore., into Qualcomm Stadium. Dungey, who is competing in his rookie year of AMA Supercross class racing, leads the field in wins with two. Hill is the lone rider for the San Manuel Yamaha team after his teammate and defending AMA Supercross class champion James Stewart underwent surgery to repair a broken scaphoid in his right wrist last week. Hill has back-to-back second place finishes and is eager to pick up his first win of 2010.

Last weekend in San Francisco, Dungey, who has led 54 of 80 laps this season, threw away a 9-second lead after a rut caught his toe, ripped it off the foot peg and sent him flying to the ground. He did salvage the race by earning fourth place, which was good enough to keep him in the points lead.

"I came out and got a great holeshot in the main, and then I caught my foot and threw it away,” said Dungey.” I salvaged it for fourth, which is not too bad. I’m thankful that I’m alright and healthy. I’m going to work on just bits and pieces this week in practice. Just try to come back and be ready for San Diego."Article - This Week in Monster Energy Supercr...

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (February 6, 2010) – After a day filled with rain, a well-groomed track greeted riders inside San Diego’s Qualcomm Stadium for the fifth round of the 2010 Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship. 51,843 Southern California fans braved the weather as Davi Millsaps, of Murrieta, Calif., captured the AMA Supercross class victory. Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Jake Weimer, of Rupert, Idaho, won his fourth AMA Supercross Lites class victory in five races of the Western Regional Championship.

As the gates dropped on the premier AMA Supercross class main event, Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Nick Wey, of Murrieta, Calif., grabbed the SPIKE Holeshot Award, followed by Honda Red Bull Racing’s Andrew Short, of Smithville, Texas, and Valli Motorsports Yamaha’s Ivan Tedesco, of Murrieta, Calif. In the first corner, points leader and Rockstar/Makita Suzuki rider Ryan Dungey, of Belle Plaine, Minn., lost his rear wheel and fell, collecting several other riders. After remounting mid-pack, Dungey fell again heading to the finish-line double and dropped to the tail end of the field. At the front, Millsaps made his move for the lead on lap three and never looked back. San Manuel Yamaha’s Josh Hill, of Carlsbad, Calif., finished second while Tedesco brought home third.

“Yeah it was a good night for me,” said Millsaps. “I came out on top. American Honda is the best crew in world. The tack was slick. You had to just be smooth, consistent and make no mistakes and that’s what I did. It was such an amazing race and I can’t explain how good it feels.”

As the AMA Supercross Lites class blasted out of the gates, GEICO Powersports Honda’s Trey Canard, of Shawnee, Okla., grabbed the SPIKE Holeshot Award with Weimer and teammate Blake Wharton, of Pilot Point, Texas, in second and third, respectively. Canard found trouble and went down on the first lap, allowing Weimer to get by and lead the rest of the way, inching closer to the Western Regional title.

“Yeah it was a good night,” said Weimer. “I was able to get a good start right behind Trey (Canard) and unfortunately he went down. I was able to get by and I just tried to be consistent from there. The track was definitely tricky but it held up well.”

Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oil Honda’s Cole Seely, of Newbury Park, Calif., earned his best-career finish in second while teammate Wil Hahn, of Decatur, Texas, finished third.

Dungey currently holds a four-point advantage over Hill in the AMA Supercross standings while Weimer leads Canard by 26 points.
